North Queensland Newsletter – December Issue

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land and seas on which we deliver our lifesaving services.  We pay our respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

Etty Bay U19 Female and Reserve Grade Male Boat Crews have travelled to Tugun this past weekend to compete in the QLD Cup Round in tough conditions.
Great effort and skills have been shown by both crews making the Etty Bay Surf Lifesaving Club and NQ Branch proud.

Our Volunteer Patrols have lowered their flags and the Lifeguards have taken over our vigilant services on the beach – it must be Summer and close to the Festive Season!
Whilst the NQ Season has drawn to a close we are busy reviewing the year and planning for next year.  We have some HUGE announcements for next season which are a culmination of the hard work and advocacy that is done on behalf of all members and clubs of the North Queensland Branch to ensure a better Life Saving Experience for all.
A huge thank you to those who attended the NQB Strategic Plan Review, where we recognised the objectives of the branch that have been achieved and solidified the priorities of our members, clubs and the branch for the next 2 years.
I am also very pleased to announce that Jemima Eveans has taken on the role of Director of Surf Sports for the North Queensland Branch (whilst also maintaining her role of Deputy President) the casual vacancy of Deputy President has been filled by Nicola Williams. Congratulations Nicola and thank you for joining the North Queensland Branch Board.
Our 2023 Branch Calendar will be released soon, so if you know anyone who wants to join our wonderful movement we will be running a pre-season BM and SRC Course to help them prepare to join ranks!
I hope those eligible active members are enjoying their membership subsidy for SLSQ for the coming season that has been processed through your clubs.  Thank you.
Our Awards of Excellence nominations have been released and I encourage you to nominate either yourself or others who are worthy of formal recognition for their great work.  They can also go on to win a State or National award!
In closing, thank you to our Board of Directors, Regional Office Staff, and everyone who has contributed to Surf Life Saving across North Queensland .
Stay Safe, I hope you enjoy a special time with those close to you, see you on the beach in 2023.

Rachael Wynberg
President, NQ Branch

2023 Lifesaving Development Program - Participants Application

Applications are now OPEN for both the South East Queensland and Northern Queensland 2023 SLSQ Lifesaving Development Program for Participants.
What is it all about?
The Lifesaving Development Program is an education program that allows members to gain a number of lifesaving awards in a short space of time. Program participants will gain a number of awards including First Aid, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and IRB Crewperson OR Silver Medallion IRB Driver. Participants will also be exposed to additional skills and development opportunities including pathways, teamwork, leadership and lifesaving operations.
The Lifesaving Development Program training method uses the Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) education model. ELT uses scenario-based training to give candidates the opportunity to experience realistic emergency scenes to practice their lifesaving skills.
Scenarios are designed and conducted under the guidance of specially trained facilitators and safety officers. While evaluations of the past programs highlight the value of scenario-based training for development of candidate skills, some participants may feel some emotional stress participating in such realistic training. Please note; the program involves a variety of realistic emergency situations.
 Who Can Apply:
Proficient Bronze Medallion members who are aged 16 years to 20 years old (as at 1 April 2023 (SEQ Program) and 1 June 2023 (NQ Program)) and are registered members of a Queensland Surf Life Saving Club are invited to apply.
